This week I began to safely practice welding for the first time. I was very enthusiastic to be able to weld with my mentor(Evyn). My mentor first showed me a basic MiG weld. He showed me how to hold the welder so that I could be comfortable. He then let me practice welding. At the start I did pretty good but then began to mess up. I figured out I was going from side to side a little fast. I fixed that and started to improve and make better welds. As time was running low in the day I did one last weld and Evyn said it was quite the improvement since I began earlier in the morning.

The title of my Genius Hour Project is "Welding on a Timeline". My mentor's name is Evyn Smith. He will be supervising me through my process of welding. There is a broken hinge on a trailer at my neighbors and this will allow me to try and repair it. I have seen a lot of objects just thrown away when all the needs to be done is just a small weld. I expect to learn a beginner's step in welding and how to do a simple weld. I will be challenged because this will be my first time welding. I will be stretched because it is a time consuming process which will make me slow down instead of just finding the quickest way to do something. Here are the objects that I am going to need: welding helmet, miler mig welder, welding gloves, welding jacket, grinders, chipping hammers, and safety glasses - My mentor and I combined have these items. My Dad, his cousin, and my cousin's dad have all been able to weld and I would at least like to try to be a part of the tradition. I have the neighbor named Evyn who is currently taking welding in college and said he would like to help/teach me the basics of welding. My main goal by the end of this project is to be able to weld Evyn's broken hinge back together on his trailer. I think repetitively messing up might be something I’ll have to get over because I tend to get annoyed when that happens, but it is something that happens and it's probably going to happen. I will try to help teach my brother and my other same age cousins how to weld and maybe even pursue this job in the future. By the end I will be able to determine the difference from a sloppy weld and a well done precise weld. It will require experience to make the weld look better and practice to gain higher amounts of skill. |
